In the past, rehabilitation following knee replacement was long and painful. Patients often were using walkers for 6-12 weeks and often would have pain for up to 6 months to a year after surgery. For the last 8 years, Dr. Merkel has used a technique, which is now being called minimally invasive knee replacement. Dr. Merkel learned the technique from a colleague from the Mayo Clinic.

With this technique the knee is replaced through a smaller incision and no muscle or tendon is cut. Since the muscles and tendons are left intact the pain is greatly reduced and rehabilitation is much quicker. In his experience with over 1,000 knee replacements performed with a minimally invasive surgical technique, Dr. Merkel has noted a dramatic reduction in post-operative pain and improved function and significantly quicker recovery time. The average patient now leaves the hospital about 3 days after surgery, usually is able to walk without a walker in a week or two and usually within 3-4 weeks is walking without any ambulatory aid or cane.
